The thriller genre of film is different from most other genres because on the surface many of them look entirely different from each other. For example the film, Seven, which is a psychological thriller, uses conventions such as synchronous sound bridge which matches the action in order to create suspense and effect as it's a psychological thriller where as

the comedy thriller, The lady vanishes, uses conventions such as short jump cuts showing different action - which again creates suspense but in a different way. Both of these films are within the same genre, however they are categorised under different sub - genres.
However, although these two
films have different sub genres they have things in common such as the way in which they are edited; they are aimed at completely different target audiences but they are edited in the same way which means they both create suspense.
