AUDIENCE PROFILING; Intended Target Audience

From looking at our chosen artist and similar artists to him, I have come to the conclusion that our music video’s intended target audience will be the younger generation; For example people aged from 17-25. This is because the style of the song, alternative RnB is very modern. 

When looking at the Teenage VALS it came to my attention that some of our target audience would fit in to these categories. For example; Innovators, as I feel our target audience will be people who like to make their mark in society and are not afraid to stand out. Drop-Outs, people who shun commitment of any kind, which relates to the lyrics in the song as the artist talks about a young troubled relationship. Cynics, people who have something to complain about as I feel our target audience wont be all together happy, they will be the stereotypical ‘moody teenager’ and lastly rebels, people who want to remake the world in their own image. 

Overall I feel ‘Rebel’ is the most appropriate characteristic for our target audience as our music video concentrates on being different/individual, as does the song relating to death, sex and broken relationships. As well as this our music video has a very artistic approach, which will attract all of the characteristics I have listed above as I feel it will interest them as they will be able to either relate to some of the scenarios or look up to them. 

Looking at the other VALS I feel ‘experiencers’ and ‘believers’ would fit our target audience. This is because experiencers are young and enthusiastic people who are still formulating life values and behaviours; Just like our artist will be doing as he is only 17. As as our artist is a young teenager it creates a connection between him and his target audience as they will be going through similar life experiences such as college and first time relationships. ‘Believers’ are conventional and conservative; people with concrete beliefs based on traditional values such as; church, family, community and the nation. As our artist is a christian himself, other christians will enjoy listening to his music as he talks about his raw life experiences.

As our artists intended target audience will be the younger generation I feel C1, D and E Jicnar scales are best suited. This is because these three categories are aimed at the unskilled or the unemployed which is what I feel our target audience will be. Young students that are still studying either at college or university or young adults who are in the work place but considered a junior. 


Above, I have created a mood board to reach what I feel would be our target audience. I have included brand names such as 'Supreme', 'Nike' and 'Adidas' as these are the types of brands I believe our target audience would wear. I have included images such as 'smoking', 'Drugs and 'Sleep Late' as I would imagine our target audience to be quite rebellious.
